LFGB vs FDA: Key Differences

While both standards address food safety in cookware, they differ in several important ways.

Strictness: LFGB is generally considered the more stringent of the two standards. LFGB migration limits for certain substances are tighter than equivalent FDA limits, and the testing protocols are often more comprehensive. A product that passes LFGB testing will typically also meet FDA requirements — but the reverse is not always true. This is why LFGB compliance is often used as a quality signal even in markets where only FDA compliance is strictly required.

Test conditions: LFGB testing uses specific food simulants (acetic acid solution for acidic foods, ethanol for fatty foods, water for aqueous foods) under defined temperature and time conditions. FDA testing uses a similar simulant approach but with different conditions in some cases. The test conditions matter because migration rates depend heavily on temperature and contact time.

Documentation format: LFGB compliance is typically documented through a formal test report from an accredited European laboratory. FDA compliance is documented through a combination of supplier declarations and supporting test data, which may come from US or internationally accredited labs.

Scope: LFGB covers the full range of food contact materials used in cookware — base metals, coatings, handles, lids. FDA regulations apply similarly broadly but are organized into a different regulatory structure.

Market access: For EU market access, LFGB (or equivalent EU food contact material regulations under Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004) compliance documentation will be required by importers and distributors. For US market access, FDA compliance documentation is the relevant requirement.

What This Means When Sourcing Cookware

Always ask for test reports before committing to production. A reputable manufacturer should be able to provide current LFGB and FDA compliance test reports for the coating systems and base materials they use. “Current” means tests conducted within a reasonable period and relevant to the specific materials used in your product — not a generic report from five years ago for a different coating formulation.

Verify that reports are from accredited laboratories. LFGB reports should come from laboratories accredited under ISO 17025 and recognized for food contact material testing. For FDA compliance documents, check that the testing methodology references specific CFR sections.

Understand what is being certified. The test report should clearly identify the specific product, coating system, and base material. A certificate for “ceramic coating type A” does not automatically cover “ceramic coating type B” or a different alloy body.

Consider LFGB as the higher bar. If you are launching in both the US and European markets, targeting LFGB compliance covers both, since LFGB-compliant products generally satisfy FDA requirements as well.
